Join the creation of Kriol Urban Fest' 1st edition in Cape Verde! Help us bring international artists to this Festival!
Hi! We're SYnergia Cabo Verde and we need your help to receive and host artists from Portugal here in Cape Verde! At this moment we are organizingKriol Urban Fest – Festival Multidisciplinar Artístico e Cultural Urbano, which is going to take place between the 13th and the 20th of October 2018.
The aims of Kriol Urban Fest are to motivate a greater artistic and socio-cultural conscience among the local community, to stimulate the community to participate to the urban regeration activities and to start changing the community's perception of the urban space.
This Festival pursues the promotion of cultural involvement among the citizens through:
Urban Art
We count on the participation of two international artists (Márcio Bahia e The Caver), who will produce the two biggest Urban Art pieces in the district. These artists will also be responsable for the organization of a workshop meant for local artists – who will then be responsable for painting one or more entire city streets (the number of painted walls will depend on the amount of paint and spray paint we will be able to acquire through our sponsors), directly involving the community in the urban requalification process through Art.
Street Performances + Open Air Cinema
KUF intends to “bring Art to the street”. By doing it, Music, Dance, Theatre and Poetry performances will take place during the days of the festival in different outdoor spots of the city. Open Air Cinema session will also take place. These activities will be entirely free to access and developed by our partners.
Street Workshops
During KUF the community will not only be spectator of the events, but will actively participate. Two free street workshops will be held: an Urban Art workshop and a Percussion instruments workshop.
Kriol Urban Party
Hip hop music and live painting night, that condenses the whole urban spirit of the festival. This will be the only paid entry event, that will allow to handle the overall costs of the night and a greater musical quality. Part of the profit of the event will be redirected to SYCV.
At the moment our biggest challenge is finding sponsors, specifically for being able to purchase travel tickets for the internacional artists. We already have been in contact with various airline companies and travel agencies, together with public and private institutions, and still cannot guarantee any sure sponsor. For this reason we have decided to create this campaign, hoping to reach every Community Art lover, and therefore acquire all the resources we need to welcome these artists to Cape Verde!
About the author
SYnergia Cabo Verde is a community development project intended for the young community of Porto Novo (Santo Antão, Cabo Verde) that promotes Art and Culture as tools for the development of personal, professional and social skills. PPL users already know us: at the beginning of this year we launched a crowdfunding campaign that, thanks to inconditional pledges, allowed us, and still does, to adquire materials for our daily activities held in Espaço Jovem.
Since we have started our activity in Porto Novo, we have managed to concretise various projects, aside from the daily activities we run during the school term in Espaço Jovem: among others, we completed two annual courses (Photography and Theatre) for an estimate amount of 30 students; we have launched “The Small Artisans”, training project of the Handicraft sector for kids and youngsters; we colaborate with the Students Residency of Porto Novo for the creation of weekly “Artistic Workshops” directed to children of the 5th grade; we organised the district's first Summer Camp, taking place during the month of August, intended for 30 children.
Soon as we arrived to Porto Novo we knew that we wanted to idealize and concretise a great artistisc festival. The idea of this Festival was born after our previous experiences in the Urban Art field, organised in colaboration with the Municipality of Braga (TOCA a Pintar, Carmen In Urbe), together with the feeling of the need to colour a bit more the streets of Porto Novo. Kriol Urban Fest is the result of everything we have observed about the creole culture, of the necessities and desires of the people we have met in Porto Novo, of our ever present will of spreading Art through the world!
Budget and due dates
Kriol Urban Fest is a project created by SYnergia Cabo Verde with the Municipality of Porto Novo and PN Events (closing event's producer). Nevertheless, being SYnergia Cabo Verde a non-profit project, it is extremely important to find some financial support in order to acquire the materials needed for the Urban Art works, to support the international artists' plane tickets, among other things.
The total budget of this Festival is around 8000€. We've decided to create this crowdfunding campaign to collect the money that we need to pay for the artists flights - we cannot wait longer for eventual sponsorships to pay for the tickets.
We have confirmed 2 street artists (Márcio Bahia + The Caver) and one hip hop artist (Tilt). At this time, the price of each return plane ticket is around 600€ - 1800€ for the three of them.

PPL comissions: 185€
If we manage to get more than we are asking, we will try to get another passage for journalist Gonçalo Olivera, who is willing to cover the closing event for the digital magazine Rimas e Batidas, and possibly invite one more street artist.
