Somos Tierra - Education Program for Environmental Sustainability

This non-profit program aims to promote Education for Sustainability among young people, particularly in its environmental component, through three stages: knowing, feeling and healing. The basis of the program is a card game.

We are facing a climate and biodiversity crisis that affects not only present generations with negative impacts on health and quality of life, but above all future generations, as it puts the survival of the human species at risk. In this sense, it is necessary to invest in education, particularly for younger people, in order to not only increase their awareness of these topics, but also reconnect them with nature so that they recognize its incalculable value and allow themselves to be amazed by its beauty.

The objective of this non-profit pilot program is to promote Education for Sustainability in schools, particularly in its environmental component, among young people, through three stages: knowing, feeling and healing. The basis of the program is a game of cards with cards that describe the problems we face (know), cards to promote reconnection with nature (feel) and cards with solutions to the problems we face (heal). In addition to dynamization in the classroom context, each card has an individual challenge that, once accepted, allows the child to earn points and in the end obtain the “Guardian of Nature” emblem.

The pilot of the program will be tested in a school in Colombia, with the participation of children aged between 6 and 8 years old, and will be carried out for 6 months, integrated into the school's educational program and with the support of a facilitator/ The.

About the author

Sara Rêgo is a researcher and professional in the area of Sustainability, who believes that education is fundamental not only to mitigate the impacts of current environmental and social challenges, but above all to find solutions to adapt to possible future scenarios. It recently launched a podcast - We Need to Act (Spotify and Apple Podcasts) - with the aim of increasing literacy on the topic of sustainability. Its objective is to create educational tools that help promote Education for Sustainability, particularly among young people.

Beatriz Camanho is the director of Colégio Rafael Pombo in Colombia and has dedicated her time to promoting new teaching methodologies, with the aim of increasing social inclusion and awakening empathy and awareness for others.

Budget and due dates

The pilot program is expected to last 6 months and has the following budget:

- Printing of materials for the game: €230 (we will try to have the printing done on recycled paper to reduce the environmental impact);

- Program facilitator for 6 months: €1,800;

- Commissions: €212.18

- Others: €70 (postage, etc.)
