We are final year students of FMUL, responsible for organizing the best night of Medicine ever! The November 5, 400 students will take to the stage at Campo Pequeno.

Night of Medicine is a spectacle created by students from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL). The first Night of Medicine, entitled What Burns… Cures!, took place at the Politeama Theatre in 1929.

The event has grown tremendously over the years. This year the live spectacle will take place at the Campo Pequeno Arena, on the 5th of November. Approximately 400 students will step onto the stage in front of 3500 people. Through satire, music, dance, theater performances and video sketches, they will discover and share their own stories.

Noite da Medicina 2014 - Campo Pequeno

Night of Medicine is a unique opportunity to bring together students and their community. Additionally, it is our biggest freshers’ welcome event and a token of gratitude from the final-year students, since all the academic community may attend the event without charge. Finally, it is a charitable project, including activities like a blood drive, bone marrow donor registry, charity barbecue, etc. because we believe that we may and we must be changemakers and make a real difference.

A doctor who only knows about Medicine does not even know Medicine, so let’s discover and nurture talent, provide a meaningful arts experience, foster teamwork and solidarity among med students, tomorrow’s doctors!

About the author

This project is an autonomous group affiliated with the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine Students’ Association (AEFML). Our students association has been committed to promoting the interests and the rights of the students as well as to organizing academic, scientific and cultural initiatives over the past 100 years.

The Organizing Committee is made up of 34 final-year students from FMUL who have been elected by the students’ general assembly. Our core team comprises 10 coordinators. So who are we?

General Coordinator | João David Gonçalves is a fighter who stands up for what he believes in, for our generation! He works tirelessly in scientific and cultural projects, associationism, scouting and summer camps, just to name a few.

Spokesperson | Pedro Câmara Pestana, who has already been part of the AEFML’s governing board, is devoted to the motto “to serve”, which he learned in scouts and recently evoked by Medicine Closer: Mozambique.

Treasurer | Tiago Rodrigues, who has served on the AEFML’s governing board, embraced Night of Medicine with the promise of sustainability.

Artistic Director | Luis Castro divides his time between sports and academics. His job in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation arouse his interest in the world of performing arts.

Production, Marketing & Design Coordinator | Duarte Brito, who has also been part of the AEFML’s board, has soon revealed his passion for design. He dreams to produce a unique event!

Stage Director | Joana Franco has discovered her interest in performing arts at a young age and has been part of a drama group. It is time for her to be on the other side of the stage and make the show happen!

Dance Coordinator | Ana Ferreira dances and moves in her own way. She supports the Food Bank, Friends of UNICEF as well as Teddy Bear Hospital.

Scenic, Costumes and Props Coordinator | Discreet and dreamy, Alexandra Silva has grown up painting, drawing, cutting and pasting, from imagination to reality. Recently she has been working in the Teddy Bear Hospital.

Logistics & Events Coordinator | Leonardo Vinagre has also served on the students association and was a forerunner of the Run/Walk for Health and Charity.

Fundraising Coordinator | Sandra Duque Maurício has coordinated the AIMS Meeting and is a passionate volunteer at Cáritas’ summer camps and Medicine Closer: Mozambique.

Budget and due dates

Night of Medicine not only celebrates the academic life and spirit but is also a token of gratitude from final-year students, therefore all the students may attend and participate without charge. Consequently, the success of this event depends on the final-year student donations as well as the support from our sponsors. Our expenditure includes the venue hire, production equipment, scenery, customs and props as well as choreographers’ fees, totaling approximately 50 000 euros. As soon as we booked the venue we paid part of the hiring fee. We eill pay the rest of expenses in the beginning of November. The first sources of income are final-year student donations. Besides sponsorships, we also held social and gathering events in order to raise funds. This year, our fundraising strategy also includes crowdfunding, because Night of Medicine is more and more a charitable and community project! In exchange of a small or large investment, which is co-payment free, we promise to do more and better starting now and ultimately become better medical professionals.
