Since 2009 that the Brigada do Mar (Sea Brigade) brings together hundreds of volunteers from Portugal and Europe to do what is "probably the biggest beach clean up in the world".
In 8 years, Sea Brigades volunteers collected more than 150 tons of marine litter from Grândola Municipality beaches.
In May of each year, the volunteers of “Brigada do Mar” (See Brigade) clean up approximately 45 kilometres of beach during 15 day’s without stopping between the beachs of Melides an Troia Peninsula.
This project also has the merit of collecting a huge amount of dangerous waste, such as pils and other damaged medicines, household appliances in decomposition, spray cans, corrosive liquids, oil cans, syringes, bottles of gas and bodies of dead animals that are dangerous for the enviroment and for our public health.
In 2016, this beach clean-up will take place between 11 and 25 May.
In order to raise awareness and educate the local and national populations to the problem of Marine Litters after the beach clean up, the Sea Brigade and Grândola Municipality are organizing an exhibition on Marine Litter.
The exhibition starts on 26 May in the Municipal Library of Grândola and will be open until June 10, in order celebrate the World Environment Day (5 June) and World Oceans Day (June 8).
Despite the support of Grândola Municipality and Gale Camping Park, regarding accommodation and the main meals of volunteers, every year the Sea Brigade needs to complement this support and ensure a number of other things, including:
- Insurance Personal Accident Volunteer;
- The fuel of 2 moto4 + 5 vehicles for the daily transportation of the volunteers;
- Extra meals for the volunteers breaks (morning and evening);
- Extra overnight stays for volunteers in bungalows and tents;
- Protective materials for volunteers: gloves, hats, sunscreens, windbreaks, sweatshirts, moisturizing creams, first aid kit and backpacks;
- Telecommunications;
- Communication and cleaning action of Marketing and exhibition on Marine Litter.
