‘The Magic Garden’ Project (in Portuguese, ‘O Jardim Mágico’) regards the garden located in the headquarters of Évora Scouts’ Regional Board. The project aims to create a space for specific users from local social care institutions to cultivate and enjoy, namely Caritas’ senior arts & crafts group and the individuals from the Rehabilitation Community, as well as the children from the charity association Chão dos Meninos.
In the garden, these users will be undertaking several gardening activities, some as part of a therapeutical programme and others with an occupational character only.
The space where all of this will take place is located inside an old convent’s walls, with a 600 square meters area and an aptitude and potential as no other in this old city’s center.
Due to the condition in which it was found, lengthy grubbing works have had to take place, loads of weeds and old wood had to be picked, beds had to be smoothed, trees pruned…well, a century-old garden, abandoned for many years, had to be brought back into light.
To the people that will come for gardening we want to give them the possibility of doing it all year round and not only when the weather is good. For that reason, we need a small greenhouse. Other very much needed equipment includes a drip irrigation system, tools and, finally, benches to rest our back and watch what is growing in the soil.
And so, in the succession of months and seasons, life will be germinating and vegetating from the hands of the project’s beneficiaries.
