Artistic Villages Festival

An URBAN ART exhibition in a RURAL AREA, which will be celebrated in the villages of Barbaído, Floor-the-Vain, Freixial Field and Juncal do Campo (Castelo Branco), during the days 19, 20 and 21 June.

"Artist Village" is an art, community and sustainability  project, which explore a new model of local development through urban artistic merger with rural. Receive creators of various artistic disciplines (urban art, illustration, graphic design, photography, performing arts ...) in residence in the villages. The works they produce born of the direct contact between them and the surrounding context, creating a unique local identity.

In the belief that art is a social development engine and place, we invite artists to inhabit these places with the local community, contacting your HERITAGE, TRADITION and CURRENT REALITY, creating a relationship of sharing and learning.

To date, the project has received 3 urban artists in the villages and will host 7 more to the Festival, and also developed photography workshops that brought about 40 participants from various parts of the country to the villages, to develop, not only an artistic, but also a social interaction with the environment and the population.

The Festival of Artistic Villages is the moment of celebration of all the work done by the project. And more than outdoor exhibition is also an opportunity for people to make close contact with the spirit of the project and all its activities involved.

About the author

The project is promoted by 2 associations. "Ecogerminar" in the area of local and sustainable development, and "Terceira Pessoa" in the field of artistic production. They gather together a team with all the skills necessary to develop the project. However, the Artistic Villages involve the whole community of villages in the festival organization, thus ensuring a set of volunteers who joins in order to build a common good.

The collaboration between EcoGerminar Association and the Third Person Association began in 2014 with the development of "Há Festa no Campo" development project in the villages through artistic practices. In this project they have been developed various artistic and social dynamics, including the populations of the villages of the Union of Parishes of Freixial and Juncal do Campo and promote the development of the villages: "Jornal das Aldeias" (Journal of the Villages), Workshop Creative Sewing, Community Meetings, Peasant's Little Market, Documentary "Há Festa no Campo" in the villages, among others. The synergy created between these entities, other partners and associations and local people came the desire to meet a set of entities associated with the social and cultural development to create the concept of artistic village.

Budget and due dates

The project Artistic Villages has mobilized project resources from "Há Festa no Campo" during the annual support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and received in late 2014 its first financial support amounting to 5,000€ by the EDP Foundation, thus covering the travel costs, food, accommodation and equipment coming from 10 artists, of which 5 were already present, to the villages in order to create artistic interventions in public or private walls. However, for the production of the Festival we don't have any monetary support.

The approximately € 2500 we hope to raise will be used for other activities that we propose as the construction of two community murals that will be created by the people who move into the villages during the festival, and also in boosting children's play area and consequent rehabilitation playground of the villages and the festival promotional materials.
