The project is the edition of the the book neighborhood Cova da Moura in press titles based on master thesis. This study examines the content published by the newspapers about a neighbourhood called Alto da Cova da Moura located on Lisbon, with the intent of understanding how the events that occur in this neighborhood are portrayed by the media and whether that has impact on people's perception of the Alto da Cova da Moura.
Our research focused on two daily newspapers (Correio da Manhã and Público) and a weekly one (Expresso), with reference to the period between January 2006 and December 2007. The main analysis focused on articles which included journalism articles, reports and opinion articles and was updated in the years 2011 and 2012 for comparison.
The content analysis yielded nineteen categories distributed amongst eight thematic groups - Politics, The State, Geographical Space, Criminality, Perceptions, Individuals and Social Work amongst others. The study revealed that the majority of the news covered by the press is related to the State's intervention in this neighbourhood through law enforcement, and the report of violent crime, with special highlights given to drug traffic and assault. In consequence, these are the main articles read by the general public, and therefore it contributes to the development and/ or consolidation of a determined image that the Portuguese society has in regards to this neighbourhood and its residents.
