Fundraising to support the participation of the Portuguese Team on the European Futsal Championship for people living with diabetes.

Back in 2012, the Ukrainian Football Association started the European Futsal Championship for people with Diabetes, which has grown not only in the number of participating countries but also in the media impact for upholding the rights of people with Diabetes.

After the Romanian’s team victory in the 2014 edition of DiaEuro, the Romanian Federation of Associations of Diabetics is in charge of the 2015 edition in Cluj-Napoca, between 19th and 26th July.

This tournament goes beyond the competition, it is an excelent way to show that Diabetes does not have to be a barrier between us and our dreams or a reason to stop playing sports. The impact in news and social media is very important to fight the discrimination that people with diabetes suffer with in today's society.

With the common goal of debunking myths about Diabetes, the Youth Group from the Portuguese Association for the Protection of Diabetics (Núcleo Jovem da Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal) and the Portuguese Association of Young Diabetics (Associação de Jovens Diabéticos de Portugal) promote regular football matches and futsal practices since 2012. In 2014, Diabentejo joined this initiative.

This was the start for the Portuguese team that joined DiaEuro in 2013 and 2014. We are now preparing the participation for the 2015 edition, with weekly training sessions.

Beyond the sports goals, the formation and divulgation of the team will promote the practice of physical exercise among people with diabetes (both Type 1 and Type 2) and their families, as well as for everyone else. The participation on tournaments and other initiatives will consolidate the idea that having diabetes is not a limitation for any sports practice, and should not inhibit people with diabetes from participating in regular competitions, side by side with non-diabetic athletes. Team members will also participate in other activities from both associations, as in school sessions, scientific congresses or gatherings, in order to promote diabetes around the general public.

We need your help to ensure the participation of the Portuguese team in this championship!

The travelling costs are high, and we need your support to sponsor our jorney to Cluj, where the tournament takes place.

About the author

Youth Group from the Portuguese Association for the Protection of Diabetics

Portuguese Association for the Protection of Diabetics (APDP) is the oldest association of people with diabetes in the world. It was founded in 1926 by physician Dr. Ernesto Roma. Back then, the name was Association for the Protection of Pauper Diabetics, since the main goal was to supply insulin for those who could not afford it. Today, APDP provides consults for 300 people a day from all over the country.

The Youth Group (NJA) was founded in 2012 by young people with diabetes with the goal of promoting group activities for other young people with diabetes. The football matches started with that goal.

Portuguese Association of Young Diabetics

The Portuguese Association of Young Diabetics (AJDP) was founded in 1996 by a group of friends with diabetes, with the goal of debunking myths about diabetes through sport activities and gatherings. It became a support network that complements the work done by medical teams, promoting experience sharing, and sensibilizes the general population through bold initiatives. A few examples are the ascencion to Mont Blanc (2001), Kilimanjaro (2005), Mount Toubkal (2007), Aconcágua (2009), in which the team was the first group of insulin-dependent people to successfully climb using the Polish Traverse Route, and Pico (2011), as well as regular walks and hikes and annual sport summer camps.
