A book for those who are interested in the Estrela Mountain Dog, with a lot of information about the breed, its temperament and behaviour, the necessary care for its balanced and harmonious development, as far as health, nutrition, exercising, education and socialization are concerned.

It aims to answer many Estrela owners’ and breed fans’ questions and doubts, such as what are the required conditions to rear them, how to prevent them from barking too much or to escape for a walk in the neighbourhood, what is the best diet, how to avoid certain health problems.

It stands up for an informed and responsible purchase and ownership, as well as a rigorous, ethical breeding, and hopes to contribute to the decrease of the number of abandoned dogs and to preserve and promote this important Portuguese national patrimony that is the Estrela Mountain Dog.

The book includes a preface by José Paulo Sales Luís, Professor at the Lisbon Technical University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. It is a bilingual edition (in Portuguese and in English), of around 200 pages, featuring many photographs and useful contacts. Graphic design by prestigious Lisbon company DDLX Design.

About the author

Manuela Paraíso has been a radio hostess and director since 1985, currently working at Radio Nostalgia. She edited the weekly music newspaper LP-Jornal de Música and, as a freelancer, wrote to several papers and magazines. Since 2010, she contributes regularly to the prestigious cultural newspaper JL-Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias, writing about classical music. In 2002, she started an amateur, technical and ethical breeding of the Estrela Mountain Dog, with the affix “Ponta da Pinta”.

She bred several world, national and international champions, exporting puppies to many countries, as well as certified therapy dogs, and contributed to scientific research. In 2004, she wrote an Estrela Mountain Dog puppy guide, available exclusively to her puppy buyers, which contained  advice and answers to the many questions and doubts that throughout the years she was asked. That guide was adapted and developed to be published as a book, so to be available  to all the breed’s admirers.
