The Regional Association of Arts Education intends to publish a book titled "10 Classical Music Pieces for Braguinha” (ukulele) by Paulo Esteireiro.
The Braguinha, traditional instrument of Madeira, had several names throughout history: braguinha, braga, machete, machete of Braga or cavaquinho. In practice, all of these names refers to the same device, although sometimes there may be slighty variations in terms of scale or even in tuning.
Currently, through the traditional music instruments, it is still possible to identify cultural bridges between Madeira and the places where the portuguese have been throughout the ages. So, part of the relevance that currently has braguinha is due to his relationship with the famous ukulele from Hawaii, an instrument which is spread by all continents.

About the author
The Regional Association of Arts Education (AREArtística) is an association which follow the purposes of public interest and aims to promote education, arts and culture in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, through the organization and implementation of cultural projects in a decentralized way. Also aims to support the implementation of different artistic projects and activities in the audiovisual field.
Paulo Esteireiro is a music scholar, writer, composer and a multi-instrumentalist, who has been leading many initiatives for the study and spreading of Madeiran musical heritage. He released two CDs dedicated to braguinha. Paulo Esteireiro is Head of the Research and Multimedia Division at Arts and Multimedia Education Services. He has a PhD in Musicology (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities / NOVA University, Lisbon). Among his publications are “Studies about Education and Culture”, “A Social History of the Piano”, “Musicians interpret Camões”, “50 Musicians Stories at Madeira” “Music Education Syllabus Regionalization”, “10 New Compositions for Braguinha” and “10 Dances for Braguinha”. He’s the coordinator of Madeira Music Collection and main author of 12 documentary films about Musicians for Madeira public Television, RTP-Madeira.
