Book Berliet, Chaimite and UMM 2nd edition

The book "Berliet, Chaimite and UMM - The Great National Military Vehicles", by Pedro Manuel Monteiro, will be reprinted, after the 1st edition's success - sold out in less than three months!

The extraordinary commercial and editorial success of the first book on Portuguese military vehicles became clear when the first edition of Pedro Manuel Monteiro's "Berliet, Chaimite and UMM - The Great National Military Vehicles" sold out in less than three months.

The truth is that the Berliet-Tramagal trucks, armored Chaimite and UMM jeeps are well known to the Portuguese for their prominence in some of the key moments of our country's recent history: the African War, 25th April, 25th November and peace missions abroad, including in Timor-Leste.

The book, however, surprised many readers by crossing these stories, told through interviews with protagonists, with the lesser known episodes behind its development and manufacturing in Portugal and the unexpected sales to countries as far away as the Philippines, Peru or Libya.

Exhausted the first edition, and having new stories and documents to reveal, we are preparing a 2nd edition, revised and expanded, to reach the stands before Christmas.

The success began soon in the campaign launch video for the first edition, which was viewed by more than 22,000 people, and generated more than two hundred requests through the crowdfunding PPL platform.

The Facebook page created for this purpose - www.facebook.com/berlietchaimiteumm - has today more than 6300 followers and the crowdfunding campaign has reached the mark of 224% of the objective, partially assuring the costs of editing and demonstrating that there is demand for books on this topic.

With summaries of all chapters in English, the book was sent across borders, having quickly arrived in Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Brazil and the United States. Due to the demand, the second edition of the book "Berliet, Chaimite and UMM" already has a new sponsor, the Fondation de l'Automobile Marius Berliet.

It should be recalled that the work counted, from the first hour, with the institutional support of the Portuguese Army, the Republican National Guard, the Combatants League, the Commandos Association, the Marines Association and the 25 de Abril Association, as well as the sponsorships of the Parish Council of Tramagal and Empordef Information Technologies.

This is a prestigious edition, limited to 500 numbered copies and a total of 168 pages, profusely illustrated with archival and current photographs. The book "Berliet, Chaimite and UMM – The Great National Military Vehicles" is printed in a slightly square format (290 mm x 260 mm), on heavyweight coated paper (170 g) with a hardcover.

About the author

Alexandre Coutinho - Freelance journalist, 55, was born in Lisbon, where he completed a Mass Communication Degree and Master. He started his career in 1986, at the newspaper O Jornal, followed by the economic folder of the newspaper Expresso, as a journalist and editor (1998-2000), where he worked until 2010. From 2007 to 2014, he was “Sirius” magazine editor and, from 2015 to 2016, “Avião” magazine director. He is co-owner of the Contra a Corrente publishing house, founded in 2011. In 1995, he launched the webpages Viagens no Meu Planeta and Volta ao Mundo de Faca e Garfo in Janela na Web; and, in 2009, the blog Vida na Terra, at the Expresso website. He is also the author or co-author of several books like "O Mensageiro de Fidel", "Como se Faz um Presidente", "Chevrolet em Portugal", "Microcrédito em Portugal - Uma Nova Oportunidade", “Auto Palace – Um Século de Vida”, “A Irmandade dos Romeiros”, “F-16 Falcões e Jaguares”, “100 Anos Chevrolet”, “Opel Ampera – Nova era na mobilidade eléctrica”, “TAP Air Portugal”, “50 Anos Alouette III na Força Aérea”, “50 Anos Porsche 911 em Portugal”, “ÓculOs – História da óptica”, “Grupo OMNI – 25 Anos de Operação em Portugal” and “Land Rover em Portugal”. Budget and due dates

The Berliet, Chaimite and UMM – The Great National Military Vehicles’ edition has a perspective cost of €4900 for 500 copies printed. The amount raised through this crowdfunding campaign aims to secure, at least, 50% of the printing costs, the remaining to be covered by the book’s sales. To this cost adds the design and page making (€500) and the new pictures treatment (€200).

The PPL’s 7% commission cost (+ VAT) and the 2,5% bank transfers cost from the participants for a minimum €2500 minimum amount of €2500: €292.12.

This project work schedule will be two months (November and December 2018), consisting, at large, in the reedition of the already published book.
