This project arises from Roberto Merino’s desire to pay homage to João Paulo Seara Cardoso (1956-2010), founder of TMP, staging a version of FAUST for the company.
It was with great pleasure that TMP accepted this challenge, also celebrating this way the 40 years of theatrical activity in Portugal of this Chilean creator based in Porto.
The show is created from the play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, written by Christopher Marlowe in 1588 or 1592, and will premiere in February 20, 2015, at Teatro de Belomonte.
As this project is not included in our business plan we need to raise funds to support a part of the overall production budget needed, in order to build marionettes, props, costumes and set design.

About the author
Teatro de Marionetas do Porto (TMP) was formed in 1988. First its activity was based on creating performances that originated from the research of the popular puppet plays. In this phase we can emphasize the study and reconstruction of the traditional Portuguese puppet theatre “teatro dom Roberto”.
From the roots, the company started a new and more experimental process, in search of elements of modernity in marionettes. In 1994 João Paulo Seara Cardoso and Isabel Barros created 3ª Estação, an experimental performance that combined dancing and marionettes.
The company’s theatrical practice nowadays shows an unconventional vision of marionettes, and this concept is always being updated. The company understands marionette theatre as a poetic and imagetic language, evoking contemporaneity. We aim to find new forms of conceiving the marionettes, ultimately kinetic objects, and new possibilities of exploring the grammar of this theatrical language, regarding interpretation and the transversal relationship with other areas of expression such as dance, arts, music and image.
The 40 shows created by TMP so far are aimed at an adult or a children’s audience and the company’s activities range from performances in the city of Porto, where over the years it has conquered a strong audience, and intense travelling activity with performances in Portugal and abroad.
