After 38 years of a consolidated artistic career, recognized by the public, by the theatre media critics e by all partners we have, one way or another, collaborated with, we now prepare our next production. The inclusion of this production in the PPL platform aims to appeal to society at large for an active participation, diversifying funding to culture and enabling effective production of this play. Within Portugal’s current economic setting, only in this manner will we be able to see this new project through.

“Romeo and Juliet – A Cats’ Story”, is a free adaptation of one of the best-known plays by William Shakespeare. This is the year of the celebration of the 450th birthday of Shakespeare, thus being timely for us to revisit one of the greatest authors of world drama.

In this version, the Capulet family is named as Coletes and the Montague family are the Monteses. The Coletes family is from Lisbon and the Monteses have their origin in the mountains. Two hostile families, who, for reasons lost in time, will make things hard for two young cats that are in love. Since cats are able to overcome death, as they are said to have 7 lives, in this version Romeo and Juliet overcome that tragic moment in the story to jointly celebrate the love that will reunite the two families.

In choosing to present the characters as cats, it is essential that they have a considerable physical expression component. The show will present himself as truly multidisciplinary by mixing acting, music, song, and dance.

With a romantic dimension based on hope, we always strive for the young spectators to feel involved and identify themselves with the characters in a place that, while imaginary, remains close to their own experience.

TIL – Teatro Infantil de Lisboa is in the midst of one of the most difficult periods since its founding and the main objective of this project is to ensure the continuity of the artistic work of this theatre company.

“Romeo and Juliet – A Cats’ Story”, has its premiere scheduled for 10th October 2014.

Who is who

CARLOS MANUEL RODRIGUES. The author. Wrote for cinema, television and theatre and was awarded the Raul Brandão Prize. For TIL he adapted and wrote, among others, D. Quixote, Camões The Prince of the Poets.

VICTOR LINHARES. The Director and Choreographer. In 1996 won the II Choreography Contest with Black Boats in National Dance Company. With TIL he directed, among others, the plays A Journey to the World of the Comic Books, The Little Prince and D. Quixote.

QUIM TÓ. The Composer. Works in music and sound production and post-production for dance, theatre, cinema and TV. Worked with TIL since 1994 where he composed the music for a lot of different plays. More recently for Camões the Prince of Poets, D. Quixote and Jack’s Magic World.

RAFAELA MAPRIL. The Costume Designer. Costumier for theatre, cinema and TV. With TIL, she designed the costumes for Jack’s Magic World, The NutCracker and The King of Mice, The Magic Flute and for many others plays.

Budget and due dates

For the production of “Romeo and Juliet – A Cats’ Story”, our theatre company needs a reinforcement of 5000 €, which will be directed towards the construction of scenery, costumes and props. The pre-production of the show has begun in July, with creatives’ meetings and research of financial and material support for the project. In the first week of September begins the daily rehearsals with the entire team: acting, direction, music, choreography… The promotion and advertising plan is set to kick off in September, with the production of all graphic material and its diffusion in all outlets including the mass media. The final rehearsals will take place in the first week of October and the opening performance will be on 10th October. “Romeo and Juliet, A Cats’ Story” will be on stage until June, 2015 to delight and amuse kids and adults alike. "Romeo and Juliet, A Cats’ Story" can be seen by the general public all Saturdays and Sundays at 15:00. There will also be pre-booked weekly performances for schools and organised groups.

    É de lamentar que neste país, protector de corruptos, e onde tanto se apregoa "a cultura" , se deixe "morrer" uma instituição, referência para adultos e crianças, e não haja uma mão que se estenda para apoiar este "Maravilhoso e Dedicado Grupo de Teatro".

    Eu é que agradeço, em meu nome e da minha filha, Ana Filipa, que chorou quando viu a notícia de que poderiam acabar.
