Sementes Project – For a better world

We believe that it is possible to build a better world!

Combining specific training and individual riches of 20 university students, the Sementes Project, taking place in August 2015, wants to work in health, educational and youth entrepreneurship areas.

We are driven to:

Promote health: through a close contact with local communities we intend to intervene in preventing infection and maternal and child health, which are epidemiologically relevant areas in this country. To control infection, we propose sharing the manual “ Be your doctor!” with simple information about the most prevalent diseases, stressing the warning signs that require the use of special care; in maternal and child health we seek to create a physical place for counselling about family planning, detection and monitoring of pregnancy, basic care at delivery and the approach to the new born.

Work education: through the encounter among pairs, the main goal is to educate for citizenship and the interest in studying. From Sports and Art, we aim to create teaching moments in small groups with plays, games, and crafts, among other activities. With this, we will share rules and values, demonstrating education as a key tool for the development of a harmonious society.

Raise awareness for entrepreneurship: among less-active young people, enhance the motivation and personal and professional skills, framing concepts of entrepreneurship like the construction, evaluation and implementation of business projects. Training will include expository moments, practical exercises, group dynamics and role-playing activities.

The purpose of the mission is the practical and effective empowerment of the population.

About the author

The University Pastoral is a Department of the Catholic Church, in this case, of the Braga archdiocese, at the service of the academies located within the geographical area of the archdiocese UCP (Faculty of Theology, Philosophy and Social Sciences); University of Minho (Braga’s and Guimarães poles); Alto Ave Health Superior Institute (ISAVE), located in Póvoa de Lanhoso; Institute of Advanced Studies of Fafe (IESF); Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) in Barcelos; Lusíada University of Vila Nova de Famalicão; Cooperative Polytechnic and University (Vila Nova de Famalicão pole).

Objectives:

Our objective is to raise awareness of the students, staff and faculty for the message of Christ within the ecclesial spirit, proposing a serious dialogue between faith and culture. In this mission, we intend to do justice to one of Benedict XVI’s phrases during his lecture at the University of Resenburg: “Not acting according to reason is contrary to God’s nature”.

Budget and due dates

Through several activities together with companies and student associations, we have managed to gather quite enough goods: Half of a container with food, school supplies, clothes and hygienic and health goods.

We are seeking now support for travels which will cost 10 795€. This crowdfunding aims to support the last instalment to the airline (2,295€).
