"Yes, I can" "I want to play" This project was born in Coimbra and helps people with Down Syndrome to pratice sports.

The mission of our organization, “Olhar 21”, is to support people with Down Syndrome in the difficult task of promoting their inclusion in society.

Through sport we developed a pioneering project in Portugal with the creation of a basketball team for people with development disabilities. The “Olhar 21” basketball team, that brings together 12 athletes, was invited to travel to Madeira Island to the World Day celebrations of Down Syndrome on March 21st.

We are a young association and we need your support so that this movement is a reality and this team can continue to dream and to grow. Sport is indeed for everyone and these athletes weekly prove that when they are given a chance, they succeed.

About the author

“Olhar 21” is an association that supports the inclusion of citizens with Down Syndrome. It formally emerged in 2010 and was born with the effort a group of parents, who are all its founding members.

Currently we have several partnerships and various projects in the music and theater spheres, we also support these children in schools, and more recently we started this project related to sport, which has survived at the expense of financial support from the parents of athletes so that we can pay the coaches.

In Coimbra we have counted on the support of some entities and individuals and in particular our patron Dr. Lúcio Laborinho, who has contributed to create incredible opportunities. Look for some of our initiatives at our website.

Budget and due dates

We do not ask much. About 3000 euros would be enough to help us cover the costs of the trip to Madeira to the six selected athletes and the four people who will accompany them. The group will departure on 20th March and will return on March 22nd. The amount of money we have set up will help pay the costs of air travel, accommodation and food. We think that the deadline to raise this money can be 20th March or 21st March, the day that marks the World Day of Down Syndrome.
